South Asian Dance Workshops

"Education in the art of dance is education of the whole man - his physical, mental and emotional natures are disciplined and nourished simultaneously in dance."
- Ted Shawn
Kadam Asian Dance and Music have specially designed a range of South Asian Dance workshops for schools, which encourage creative learning.

South Asian Dance
South Asian dance consists of a series of refined dance techniques, to a strict line within a defined rhythmic structure involving both body and mind. Music, movement, symbolism, colour, rhythm come together in this subtle art, which is alive and growing in Britain. South Asian dance has been used to meet the requirements of the P.E and Dance curriculum at primary and secondary levels of education.

South Asian dance covers many different styles and types such as, the classical traditions of Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Odissi, which have evolved over many centuries, the folk dances which are freer and more spontaneous and the adaptations of these forms to a more creative interpretation in an educational setting.

Workshop Description
The workshop will provide a practical introduction to South Asian dance and encourage participants to analyse movements and develop understanding of South Asian dance.

On the day of the workshop, the tutor will lead participants through simple movements, gestures and expressions. During the workshop, participants will draw upon a range of stimuli to create a short dance piece.
A fifty-minute workshop will touch upon the following elements:
  • Namaskar: Greeting to open and close session, which involves marking the space and touching the earth in a gesture of respect
  • Warm Up
  • Chanting / Clapping of rhythmic syllables
  • Simple movements involving co-ordination of hand, foot, head:; eye-hand etc.
  • A taught sequence
  • Directions/Pathways of movement
  • Introduction of music to accompany the movement
  • A simple completed dance
One week prior to the workshop, Kadam will send the school a CD ROM and a video on South Asian dance. The CD ROM called “Living Tradition” covers the history and background of South Asian dance in Britain and the Video “Dance Dance Wherever You May Be”, introduces basic concepts of the dance analysing the dance form into components of shape, rhythm and expression. The video is suitable at all levels whilst the CD ROM for eight years plus.

The teacher who is co-ordinating the workshop should show the CD ROM and the video to the pupils who will participate. Our experience of prior workshops suggests that it is essential that the participants have a brief introduction of South Asian dance before they attend the workshop to maximise the learning experience. The CD ROM and the Video will become an asset to the school library for future reference.
