The International Summer School is a full time intensive dance programme offering holistic training in Kathak, Odissi and Bharatanatyam with an emphasis on healthy and safer dance practice taught by leading exponents and experts in state-of-the-art studios.

Tutor Bios:
Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj, son and disciple of Shri Acchan Maharaj, is the complete inheritor of the Lucknow Gharana. His uniqueness is his all round personality: of dancer, musician, poet and teacher. At the Kathak Kendra he has trained a legion of great dancers who carry his work forward into the 21st century. He now teaches at the various centers of his organization Kalashram in
India, and visits USA and the UK as the highest ambassador of Kathak.
Professor C. V. Chandrasekhar, is one of India’s foremost gurus and dancers. He was trained at the Kalakshetra School in Chennai under the tutelage of Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. Professor Chandrasekhar combines knowledge and expertise in both dance and music. As an academician he set up the Faculty of Dance at Baroda University. His pristine Bharatanatyam technique which he demonstrates in his own body in his seventies is an inspiration to all dancers.
Jaya Chandrasekhar trained in Bharatanatyam under Lalitha Sastri in New Delhi. She has been an invaluable partner to C V Chandrasekhar, accompanying him as a dancer, vocalist, nattuvanar and co-choreographer throughout the years.
Sujata Mohapatra is an outstanding performer amongst the present generation of Odissi dancers. She trained under her father-in-law, the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Sujata Mohapatra teaches at Srijan in Bhubaneswar, the prime Odissi Institute started by her guru.
Shankar Behera is unique amongst Odissi gurus in opening up the form to international students through his annual visits to Europe over the last two decades. He maintains the traditions of the Kelucharan Mahapatra School whilst in his own dance expressing a unique individuality.
Pushkala Gopal is one of the leading Bharatanatyam teachers in the UK and is the Artistic Director of Mudralaya School in London. She has worked extensively in Britain and abroad as a teacher, choreographer, composer and singer.
Anusha Subramaniam is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and dance movement therapist. She is one of the finest exponents of Bharatanatyam in the UK. She has also trained as a Pilates teacher. Anusha has performed and taught internationally.
Sujata Banerjee is one of the most versatile Kathak dancer / teacher in the UK. Sujata has a particular interest in training dancers in a healthier way. She is a qualified aerobic tutor and fitness professional, with an MSc in Sports Science from Brunel University. Sujata has directed the Summer School for the last ten years.
Mahua Shankar belongs to the new generation of Kathak performers and teachers. She received her entire training from Pandit Birju Maharaj and currently teaches and performs for Kalashram.
Pallabi De started learning Kathak from her Guru Smt. Kanan Sen and later received advance training from Pandit Birju Maharaj. She teaches and tours with Maharajji’s Kalashram in India and abroad.
Levels
Beginner
This level is suitable for those who have been learning their chosen dance style for at least a year and attend one dance class a week. It is also a refresher course for those who are trained but are out of practice. This level is also an opportunity for Intermediate and Advanced level dancers who want to acquire a different style. The programme will focus on the essential foundations of technique
Intermediate
This level is suitable for those who have been learning the style for a minimum of five years. It focuses on improving and enhancing technique and developing performative skills. The classes will require a greater movement vocabulary and will move at a faster pace.
Advanced
This level is suitable for those who have been learning dance for a minimum of ten years or
are in full time dance training or have recently completed a professional dance training course.
The programme will provide challenging material with a focus on performance qualities – demanding strong standards of technique and a high level of fitness.
We are not offering an introductory course to complete beginners.
A typical day’s schedule
Daytime Activity
Dance technique classes will include as appropriate for level the basic components of adavus, exercises, and rhythmic structures including tala, laya, gati and sequences. There will be two dance classes daily, one dedicated to building technique and the second to teaching a choreographed item. The students will be provided a copy of the music on CD if the item is pre-choreographed, at the start of the course or in the case of an on the spot choreography by the close of the Programme. The mornings will start with a warm up and gentle aerobics. Daily a yoga or Pilates class will reinforce the awareness of good, safe dance practice. Post lunch lectures will give the theoretical basis of healthy dance focusing on anatomy, prevention of common injuries, nutrition etc. The Programme will also examine the questions of Aesthetics through lecture and discussion. The day will close with a performance by a leading dance exponent including the senior tutors.
On the last day of the Summer School, participants will perform the choreographed piece for family and friends.
Evening Performances
One of the highlights of the Summer School experience is attending the evening performances scheduled into the programme. The tutors are the leading exponents of their styles and watching them perform is an education in itself. Over the course of the week each of the senior tutors will have a performance slot. However this year we kick off on Sunday 22nd July with a very special guest – Mythili Prakash, a dynamic and extremely talented young Bharatanatyam dancer. Mythili who has received her training from her mother Viji Prakash in Los Angeles, has already done two critically acclaimed tours in the UK On the opening night, Mythili will set the tone by holding a torch to the upcoming dancers and summer school aspirants. In addition the Summer School will host other leading UK artists.
Studios and Accommodation
Studios
The classes will be held in the various dance studios and spaces, overlooking the river at The Lowry. Set in a magnificent waterside location at the heart of the redeveloped Salford Quays in Greater Manchester, The Lowry is an architectural flagship with a unique and dynamic identity. The Lowry is 10 minutes drive from Manchester City Centre, 20 minutes drive from Manchester Airport, and a quarter of a mile from the motorway network, giving access from all over the North West and beyond.
Accommodation
The International Summer School is a full-time programme with daytime schedules and evening activities. It is highly recommended that participants who are travelling from a distance of more than 5 miles stay in the accommodation offered. This allows the participants to enjoy social interaction with fellow dancers and tutors. The accommodation provided to participants is in student apartments close to Manchester City Centre which is 4 miles from the studios at The Lowry. A coach will transport participants between the accommodation and the studios and back. Around the accommodation, there are shops including a late night Tesco Express, pubs and cafes in this lively student quarter of Manchester. The famous Curry-Mile with Asian eateries is less than a mile away. The accommodation will consist of single or double rooms with bedding and an en-suite facility. A fully equipped kitchen with fridge, freezer, cooker and microwave will be available per block of four rooms. The accommodation also has the facility of a gym and swimming pool which can be used by paying a small fee.
