Pulse - Autumn 2005

Autumn issue 2005

The Autumn edition of PULSE DANCE
"Why do dancers talk so much?"
packed with News, views, reviews and features including an exclusive interview with Farooq Chaudhry, the man behind Akram Khan

".... Academics and western choreographers have long 'talked' about dance in scholarly circles. For decades dancers have been explaining stories to their spectators. But, suddenly, it seems there's a whole host of newly created democratic domains and reasons for dancers to talk about dance- conferences, competitions, the internet, and PULSE included; there are also wholly new self-conscious, self-focused ways of talking about the dance.
Still, why do south asian dance makers here in particular talk/ write/ speak/ analyse/defend/ re-invent so much? ....." - From the editor (Chitra Sundaram)

Cover feature

Freedom from dancespeak: silence?

Once dancers spoke mostly to explain their dances to their audiences; today they speak a lot about 'issues' and to many audiences, outside of performance. Alessandra Lopez y Royo asks around why dancers say so much, and speculates whether there may be an alternative.

Much more TALK, TALK, TALKing than dance

Shobana Jeyasingh who warns against talking about issues overtaking the production of dance, retraces a long history and sociology of speaking about dance in Britain, in response to a series of questions from PULSE.

Turn the spotlight back on the dance!

Speaking in London, pioneering Indian dance and arts scholar Kapila Vatsyayan called for more talk about dance and in dance terminology, and not just around the dance. Prarthana Purkayastha reports.

Who, where and what they said lately

From Negotiating Natyam, which focused on bharatanatyam to concerns in the US about attracting the youth to dance at IDEA's conference, much was said by dancers and others in several symposia, and time was typically too short for discussion. But the reports are a start and here they are!

Feature

Through the lens

Film maker Sangeeta Datta catches Akademi's presentation of dance at the mayor's multicultural Trafalgar Square open air summer celebrations, and reminisces about site specific performance in films and temples!

Profile

"It's almost like a love affair!" So what's the secret to the phenomenal success of Akram Khan Company? In an exclusive interview, the company's producer and founding partner Farooq Chaudhry talks candidly to PULSE about many things, revealing his total absorption with brand Akram Khan.
