Folk Dances

Amongst the folk dances the two types practised in Britain are the bhangra with origins in Punjab and the garba of Gujerat. Bhangra has been taken up enthusiastically by young Asians who blend elements of bhangra with club dances. It is equally popular with their parent’s generation and no Punjabi wedding would be complete without it. Bhangra has a characteristic shoulder shrug with arms held above the shoulders. Groups of male dancers often create high pyramid formations by standing on shoulders.

The rasgarba is performed in a circle with claps and turns. Dandia ras is danced with wooden sticks called dandia. In October, the Gujerati community celebrates the Navratri (Nine Nights) festival and as part of the ceremony, young and old of both sexes join in the dandia ras.
