Kathakali

Kathakali comes from the dance drama tradition performed mainly by male dancers. It originated in the south western state of Kerala.

Kathakali dance uses an elaborate dress and specialised make up. Its basic stance is a wide turnout with the weight of the body on the outer edges of the feet. The powerful base supports the dress and lends a dramatic force to the performance.

To the accompaniment of large drums chenda ,cymbals and vocalists the actor dancers perform stories from the Indian epics such as The Ramayana and The Mahabharata.
